Idea for Aurora Clinic with a Doctor/Lawyer Partnership Stems from Mold-Related Asthma Problem

An interesting idea: launched a year ago in Aurora, the Northern Illinois University Health Advocacy Clinic showcases a partnership between lawyers and doctors. While it may seem like a strange idea, this clinic is able to both treat and advocate for patients who may be in an unfair legal situation. In addition, students at the university are able to gain valuable experience. This partnership is really a win-win for all.

The idea for this type of a clinic began in the 1990s with Dr. Barry Zuckerman, who was becoming frustrated that so many of his asthma patients were not getting any better despite repeated treatment. With a little digging, he found that the apartment building had a serious mold problem. He then decided to create a clinic that both treats patients and advocates for them legally. This is where NIU in Aurora got the magnificent idea.
